In the early part of the 20th century our 'Swan' brand name was registered by Bulpitt & Sons Ltd, a brass founders established in Camden Street, Birmingham, England. The brand was primarily used for domestic ranges of polished aluminium products like frying pans, kettles tea sets and jelly moulds.

From their first pioneering breakthrough - an electric element that could be immersed in water - they created a whole range of products based around it; including tea urns, kettles & steamers. Later, the company also developed and patented a 'safety cut-out' for kettles.

The Swan brand continued it's success throughout the next few decades and became synonymous with solid British manufacturing. It was said there was a Swan-branded product in virtually every home.
The passion and commitment that saw the Swan brand prosper during those early years is still just as evident now. Today, our brand offers a wide range of electrical and home products that carry the same highly regarded quality as always. When you combine this with our aesthetic sensibility and our desire to meet the demands of contemporary life, you have a brand with real purpose and credibility. Today, if there's one key thing we've learned, it's that irrespective of price range we should all expect to own great quality, beautifully styled products.

In 1933 Swan were the first to develop an electric heating element that could be immersed in water. This led to the Swan kettle range, that could boil up to 6 pints of water in just over 9 minutes - pretty hot for the time! These days it takes about 2 minutes for the kettle to boil.
In 1933 most homes were heating their irons over the gas ring or still putting hot coal in them. This Swan product was the first to use an element with a handle, which plugged straight into a light bulb socket. And at a mere 14 shillings (70p), it meant many households could have one.
In 1939, this beautifully moulded Bakelite Electric Hair Dryer came in a range of colours, from mahogany and walnut to mottled green - cool colours for the day! The weight of this latest technology was likely to be at least 2 kilos - which was still considered slick back then!
Although this looks like something from a science fiction movie, the image on the right was actually a room heater from around 1933. Unfortunately, as cool as this design was, it wouldn't conform to today's strict European safety standards.
