Home contents policies may include cover that is not applicable to you if you rent your home or are only interested in insuring a limited number of your most valuable possessions; but Essential Contents Insurance lets you choose the level of cover that's right for you.
  • This cover protects you and your family's personal possessions, the things you would take with you if you moved, things like; TVs, games consoles, jewellery, laptops.
  • You and your family's possessions could be protected should you suffer from an unexpected event like theft from your home, fire or flood.
  • Isme Essential Contents Insurance has been created to give a level of cover that you can personalise without paying for the cover you don't need.

With Isme Essential Contents Insurance, you choose which items you want to protect in your home.
  • To help you decide how much cover you need, you can choose to insure as many or as few of your treasured items as you like, up to a maximum of £20,000
  • The total level of cover and premium is calculated from the purchase price of the things you've chosen to cover
  • When you've selected everything you want to cover, this will give you a total insured value, which means the contents in your home are insured up to that value
  • You have the flexibility to add and remove items during the quotation process to get the price that's right for you, you can even add and remove items at any point during the life of your policy
  • If you need to make a claim, your contents, not just those originally chosen, will be covered up to the total insured value, whether the items you originally listed are affected by the claim or not

Essential Contents Insurance lets you choose the level of cover that's right for you without paying for cover you don't need. This cover protects you and your family's personal possessions, the things you would take with you if you moved, things like; TVs, games consoles, jewellery, laptops against thing like theft from the home, fire or flood. Essential Content Insurance is flexible and lets you choose the items you want to cover up to a maximum cover limit of £20,000.

+ Who will arrange Essential Contents Insurance for me?

+ How does Essential Contents Insurance work?

When you click to get a quote for Essential Contents Insurance you will be asked a little about your home and then about the essential items in your home that you'd like to protect (maximum 20 items) and this will help you determine what level of cover you need for those items. However as an added benefit, the Essential Contents Insurance policy is not limited to these selected items, it also provides you with cover for your other home contents up to the total value shown on your schedule.


This means that if you didn't list something in your home that you need to make a claim for that is lost or damaged, provided the cause is covered and it doesn't exceed the total value provided by your policy, then you can go ahead and submit your claim.

+ How long does the policy last?

The policy term is 12 months, at which point you can choose to renew this policy. You will be notified at least 21 days before your policy is due to renew

+ When will I receive any documentation?

When you have purchased your policy, your documentation will be sent to you by email. You will also be able to access your documentation 24/7 through your My Insurance Account, where it is available to view.

+ What happens if I change my mind and want to cancel my policy?

If you cancel the policy within 14 days of the date you receive your policy documents you will receive a refund of the premium in full provided no claim has been made.


If you cancel your policy after 14 days of the date you received your policy documents you will receive a refund of the premium on a pro-rata basis provided no claim has been made.

+ How do I make a claim?

If you are unfortunate enough to suffer loss or damage to your home or contents, you should report the incident as soon as reasonably possible.

There are a number of ways you can do this;

Step 1 - Log in to 'My Insurance account' by clicking here
Step 2 - Once logged in click on the 'view my policies' link within the 'My policies' section
Step 3 - Select notify a claim on the right hand side
Step 4 - Enter your claim details and click the 'submit' button
Step 5 - Your claim will be submitted and you will be contacted by a specialist claims handler to confirm next steps

If you need to make a change to your policy for example you're moving home or you'd like to add new items to increase your level of cover:

Step 2 - Once logged in click on the view my policies link within the My policies section
Step 3 - Select manage policy on the right hand side
Step 4 - Select amend my details within the section where you need to make the change and follow the on screen instructions

The changes you make may affect your premium, before you confirm the change you will be notified of any of any refund or additional premium that is due.


It is important that you notify Isme Essential Contents Insurance of any changes. If this is not disclosed this could invalidate your policy and mean that the insurer may not pay out in the event of a claim.

There is no administration charge for making a change to your policy.

You are able to pay for your Essential Contents insurance using your Isme credit account or via Direct Debit, Credit or debit card.

+ How much cover do I need?

With Essential Contents Insurance you have the flexibility to choose the key items in your home that you want to protect - this will help you determine the level of cover that's right for you.


+ Do I get brand new for old replacement?

Yes, should you need to claim under Isme Essential Contents Insurance, and your items cannot be repaired you could receive brand new ones in the event of a claim. If the original is not available it could be replaced with the nearest possible alternative. Please see the policy wording for more details.

+ What is the policy excess?

There is no excess to pay on Essential Contents Insurance.
